Ending Educational Politics

Last week, the Texas State Board of Education changed its high school science standards. Critics had complained that existing standards encourage the teaching of creationism. These types of political controversies would not exist if government schools were abolished.

As it is, the state board establishes standards that all schools must follow. Parents have input only to the extent that they can influence educational bureaucrats. If they don’t like the standards that are established, their children will be taught ideas that they may disagree with.

If government schools were abolished, each school could choose the curriculum that it would offer. And parents could choose the school that teaches the ideas that they want their children to learn. Controversies like creationism versus evolution would simply vanish.

Government’s monopoly on education makes school boards magnets for political controversies. Groups with conflicting views on what should be taught compete to influence the decision makers. And no matter the end result, everyone is forced to abide by the standards set by the bureaucrats. Parents are forced to subject their children to ideas with which they may disagree. Teachers are forced to teach ideas with which they may disagree. Taxpayers are forced to pay for the teaching of ideas with which they may disagree.

No matter one’s views on evolution, school prayer, sex education, history, or any other topic, government schools perpetuate a gross injustice against parents, teachers, and taxpayers.

For decades, school boards have attempted to forge a compromise on these controversial issues. But compromise simply leaves everyone dissatisfied, continues the injustice, and fails to address the fundamental issue.

The only moral solution is to abolish government schools and allow each individual to choose which ideas he will support, whether he is a parent, teacher, or taxpayer. If we want to get politics out of education, we must get government out of the schools.
